A Tramp Abroad
A Tramp Abroad is Mark Twain's account of a walking tour through Germany, the Alps and Italy, published in 1880. The walking is mostly a pretext: Twain and his agent Harris take trains, carts and rafts whenever possible, and the book digresses into student dueling at Heidelberg, a raft trip down the Neckar, an elaborately staged ascent of the Riffelberg, Swiss hotel manners and the paintings of the old masters. Along the way come some of his best-known set pieces, among them Jim Baker's blue-jay yarn and the appendix on "The Awful German Language." The tone is relaxed and deadpan, the narrator forever more impressed by himself than by the scenery.
