The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

by Mark Twain

About 7 h 25 min of reading45 chapters

Huck Finn, the son of the town drunk, has been taken in by the Widow Douglas and is being civilized against his will when his father reappears to claim him and his money. Huck fakes his own death and lights out for Jackson's Island, where he meets Jim, Miss Watson's slave, who has run away rather than be sold down the river. The two of them take a raft down the Mississippi by night, and the novel follows them through feuding families, con men, a lynch mob and the Phelps farm, where Tom Sawyer turns up to make everything worse. Published in 1884 and 1885, the book is written entirely in Huck's voice, and its treatment of race and conscience has been argued over ever since.
