The Gilded Age: A Tale of Today
The Gilded Age, published in 1873, was written jointly by Mark Twain and his Hartford neighbor Charles Dudley Warner, and gave its name to an era. The Hawkins family of Tennessee pins its hopes on a tract of worthless land that is always about to make them rich, while the irrepressible Colonel Beriah Sellers schemes in Washington and the beautiful Laura Hawkins becomes a lobbyist in a Congress where votes are openly bought. A railroad to nowhere, a steamboat disaster, a murder trial, and the speculative fever of the post-war years fill out a satire of greed and political corruption. It is uneven, as collaborations are, but Sellers is among Twain's best comic creations. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
