Following the Equator: A Journey Around the World
In 1895, bankrupt after the failure of his publishing house, Mark Twain set out at sixty on a year-long lecture tour around the world to pay his creditors. Following the Equator, published in 1897, is the record: Hawaii seen from a quarantined ship, Fiji, Australia and New Zealand, Ceylon, two months in India, Mauritius, and South Africa on the eve of the Boer War. Twain writes about the treatment of Aboriginal Australians, the Thugs, the caste system, Benares, and the diamond mines of Kimberley with a bitterness about empire and race that was new in him, and each chapter opens with a maxim from Pudd'nhead Wilson's calendar. It is the last and darkest of his travel books. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
