Roughing It, published in 1872, is Mark Twain's account of the years he spent in the Far West. In 1861 he traveled by stagecoach across the plains with his brother Orion, newly appointed secretary of Nevada Territory, and the book follows him through the silver fever of the Comstock, failed prospecting, newspaper work in Virginia City, the bohemian life of San Francisco and a trip to the Sandwich Islands, now Hawaii. Twain mixes tall tales, satire and reporting, and the chapters on the stage journey, the Mormons, the Nevada mining camps and the ways of the Western press are among his funniest. It is also a record of how a drifting printer became a writer. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
