Henry de Vere Stacpoole (1863–1951) was an Irish novelist and physician. The son of a clergyman in Kingstown, near Dublin, he qualified in medicine in London and served for years as a ship's doctor, voyages that supplied the settings of his fiction. The Blue Lagoon (1908), the story of two children growing up alone on a Pacific island, was an enormous success and has been filmed repeatedly; he followed it with two sequels and many other novels of the sea and the South Pacific, including The Pearl Fishers and The Ship of Coral. He spent his last decades on the Isle of Wight.
