Manon Lescaut

by Abbé Prévost

About 4 h 10 min of reading13 chapters

Manon Lescaut tells the story of the Chevalier des Grieux, a young man of good family who meets a girl named Manon at an inn in Amiens and abandons his studies, his father and his honor to follow her. Manon loves him but loves comfort more, and each time money runs out she finds another protector; each time he forgives her, sinks a little further into cheating and theft, and follows her again, finally to the colony of Louisiana. The Abbé Prévost published the novel in 1731 as the last volume of a longer work, and it was briefly banned in France. Told by des Grieux himself, without excuses but with great tenderness, it inspired operas by Massenet and Puccini. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first chapter is free.
