The Uncommercial Traveller
The Uncommercial Traveller collects the papers Charles Dickens wrote under that name for his magazine All the Year Round between 1860 and 1869, first gathered in 1861 and enlarged in later editions; this one contains thirty-seven. The traveler has no goods to sell and goes where he pleases: to the wreck of the Royal Charter on the Welsh coast, to Wapping Workhouse, to a cheap theater, to the City churches on a Sunday, through the streets on his night walks, back to the Dullborough of his childhood, to Chatham and Calais and the Italian prisoner's village. The pieces are the best of Dickens's journalism, observant, humane and often funny, and several of them are among his finest short prose.
