Nicholas Nickleby
Left penniless by his father's death, nineteen-year-old Nicholas Nickleby is found a post by his cold uncle Ralph at Dotheboys Hall, a Yorkshire school where the one-eyed Wackford Squeers starves and beats his pupils. Nicholas thrashes the schoolmaster and flees with the broken boy Smike, joins Vincent Crummles's traveling theater company, and returns to London to protect his sister Kate from the men Ralph has set on her. Dickens published the novel in monthly parts in 1838 and 1839, after visiting the Yorkshire schools in person. It is a sprawling mixture of exposure, farce and melodrama, with the Crummles chapters among the funniest things he wrote. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
