Great Expectations

About 12 h 22 min of reading59 chapters

Pip, an orphan raised by his harsh sister and her kind blacksmith husband in the Kent marshes, helps an escaped convict and is later summoned to the decaying house of Miss Havisham, who stopped the clocks on her wedding day and is raising the beautiful Estella to break men's hearts. When an anonymous benefactor gives Pip money and the prospect of becoming a gentleman, he assumes he knows where it comes from, and he is wrong. Dickens published the novel in weekly parts in 1860 and 1861. It is told in the first person by an older Pip who judges his younger self without mercy, and it is often considered his most perfectly shaped book. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
