About 23 h 47 min of reading66 chapters

David Copperfield tells his own life from his birth in Suffolk, fatherless, with a gentle mother and a loyal servant, Peggotty, through the arrival of a stepfather, Mr. Murdstone, who sends him to a cruel school and then to wash bottles in a London warehouse. He runs away to his formidable aunt Betsey Trotwood, grows up, falls in love foolishly and then wisely, and becomes a writer. Around him are some of Dickens's most lasting people: the improvident Mr. Micawber, the humble and hateful Uriah Heep, the glamorous and ruinous Steerforth, Little Em'ly and the Peggottys of Yarmouth. Published in monthly parts in 1849 and 1850, it was Dickens's own favorite among his novels and the one closest to his life. Read it online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first chapter is free.
