Or, the Parish Boy’s Progress

About 10 h 32 min of reading53 chapters

Oliver Twist is the story of a boy born in a workhouse, farmed out, apprenticed to an undertaker and finally run away to London, where he falls into the hands of Fagin and his gang of child thieves. Around him Charles Dickens sets the Artful Dodger, the brutal Bill Sikes, the prostitute Nancy and the pursuing figure of Monks, who knows who Oliver really is. Published in installments from 1837 to 1839, it was Dickens's second novel and his first attack on the New Poor Law and on the way England treated its poor children. The comedy of Bumble the beadle sits next to some of the most frightening scenes Dickens ever wrote. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
