The Pickwick Papers

by Charles Dickens

About 20 h 08 min of reading58 chapters

Samuel Pickwick, a retired businessman of great benevolence and no worldly sense, sets out with three companions to observe life in the English provinces. What he finds is coaching inns, cricket matches, a contested election, a fraudulent actor named Jingle and, above all, Sam Weller, the Cockney bootblack whose sayings made the book a national craze. A misunderstanding with his landlady leads to the breach-of-promise trial of Bardell v. Pickwick and a spell in the Fleet prison, where the comedy darkens. Dickens was twenty-four when the monthly parts began in 1836, and the novel grew from a set of sporting sketches into the work that made him famous. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
