A Christmas Carol in Prose; Being a Ghost Story of Christmas

About 1 h 55 min of reading14 chapters

A Christmas Carol is the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, a London moneylender who hates Christmas, and of the single night in which the ghost of his dead partner Jacob Marley and three spirits show him his past, his present and the future that awaits him. Charles Dickens wrote it in a few weeks in the autumn of 1843 and published it in time for the holiday, with colored plates by John Leech. It is short, funny and frightening by turns, and its pictures of the Cratchit family and of the poor in the streets carry the social argument Dickens had been making in his longer novels. Much of what people now think of as Christmas comes from this book. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
