Our Mutual Friend
Our Mutual Friend, serialized in 1864 and 1865, is the last novel Charles Dickens completed. It opens on the Thames at night, with a boatman and his daughter towing a corpse, and the body is identified as that of John Harmon, heir to a fortune made from London's dust heaps. The inheritance passes to the old servants Mr and Mrs Boffin, who take up the mercenary Bella Wilfer and a mysterious secretary; around them turn the predatory Lammles, the schoolmaster Bradley Headstone's murderous passion for Lizzie Hexam, the one-legged ballad seller Silas Wegg, and the dinner parties of the Veneerings. Money as dust and the river as death and rebirth hold the sprawling design together. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
