The Mystery of Edwin Drood

by Charles Dickens

About 6 h 24 min of reading26 chapters

In the cathedral town of Cloisterham, the choirmaster John Jasper is devoted to his nephew Edwin Drood, who is engaged by his late father's wish to Rosa Bud, a girl neither of them is sure he loves. Jasper, an opium user, is secretly obsessed with Rosa himself. On Christmas Eve, after a quarrel between Edwin and the hot-tempered Neville Landless, Edwin disappears, and suspicion falls on Neville. Dickens died in June 1870, having written six of the twelve planned installments, and the novel stops there; whether Edwin is dead, and who the mysterious Dick Datchery is, has been argued over ever since. What survives is tightly plotted, unusually dark and the closest Dickens came to a true detective story. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
