A Christmas Carol

by Charles Dickens

About 1 h 55 min of reading6 chapters

A Christmas Carol, published in December 1843, is Charles Dickens's story of the miser Ebenezer Scrooge and the single night that changes him. Visited first by the ghost of his dead partner Jacob Marley, then by the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come, Scrooge is shown his lonely boyhood, the household of his underpaid clerk Bob Cratchit and the crippled Tiny Tim, the merriment he refuses to share and the unmourned death that awaits him. Dickens wrote the book in six weeks, partly out of anger at the condition of poor children, and its mixture of ghost story, comedy and plea for generosity did much to shape the way Christmas is kept in the English-speaking world. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
