Little Dorrit
Little Dorrit, serialized between 1855 and 1857, is Charles Dickens's novel of imprisonment in all its forms. Amy Dorrit was born in the Marshalsea debtors' prison, where her father has been held for so long that he is known as the Father of the Marshalsea. Arthur Clennam, returning from twenty years in China to a cold mother and a house full of secrets, takes an interest in the family and sets out to untangle their affairs. The story moves from the prison to the Circumlocution Office, Dickens's satire of government by delay, to the speculator Merdle whose collapse ruins half of London, and to the ruins and salons of Italy. Beneath the satire runs one of Dickens's quietest love stories. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
