The marvellous land of Snergs
Sylvia and Joe, two children from a colony of unwanted children on a stretch of coast run by the formidable Miss Watkyns, slip away into the forest and fall in with Gorbo, a Snerg: one of a race of short, cheerful, enormously strong people who live in a nearby town and are fond of feasting. What follows takes in a reformed ogre named Golithos, a witch called Mother Meldrum, a comic knight errant and a king who keeps changing his mind. E. A. Wyke-Smith published the book in 1927 for his daughter. J. R. R. Tolkien read it aloud to his children and later named it as a probable unconscious source for the hobbits. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
