This second volume of the letters of Charles Dickens, edited after his death by his sister-in-law Georgina Hogarth and his daughter Mamie, covers the years 1857 to 1870. Each year opens with a short narrative of events and then gives the letters in order: the purchase of Gad's Hill, the separation from his wife, the launch of All the Year Round, the public readings in Britain and the American tour of 1867 and 1868, the Staplehurst railway accident, the writing of A Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations and Our Mutual Friend, and the unfinished Edwin Drood. The editors chose letters to friends and family rather than business, and the volume ends with his two last letters, written in June 1870. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
