The Letters of Charles Dickens. Vol. 1, 1833-1856
This first volume of The Letters of Charles Dickens, edited by his sister-in-law Georgina Hogarth and his eldest daughter Mamie and published in 1880, covers the years 1833 to 1856. Each year opens with a short narrative of Dickens's doings before the letters themselves, so that the reader follows him from the first sketches and the triumph of Pickwick through Oliver Twist and Nickleby, the American tour of 1842, the year in Italy, the founding of the Daily News and Household Words, the amateur theatricals, Copperfield, Bleak House and Hard Times, and the purchase of Gad's Hill. The correspondents include Forster, Macready, Maclise, Wilkie Collins and his publishers. The editors chose letters that show him at work and at play. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
