About 38 min of reading10 chapters

The Corsair; or, The Little Fairy at the Bottom of the Sea is a Christmas burlesque by William Brough, first performed at the Lyceum in London on 26 December 1856 and later staged in New York. It takes the ballet Le Corsaire, itself drawn from Byron's poem, and turns it into rhymed farce: Conrad the pirate is played by a woman, Seyd Pasha is a terrible Turk, and Medora and Gulnare are watched over by Submarina, chief inspector of the ocean police, and the little fairy Serena. The text is full of puns, topical jokes and song parodies, and this acting edition includes cast lists, costume notes and stage directions, a rare printed survival of the Victorian pantomime stage. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the opening scene is free.
