Madame Flirt

by Charles Edward Pearce

A Romance of 'The Beggar's Opera'

About 5 h 07 min of reading28 chapters

Madame Flirt is a historical romance about Lavinia Fenton, the actress who created the part of Polly Peachum in John Gay's The Beggar's Opera in 1728 and became the most talked-about woman in London. Charles Edward Pearce follows her from a childhood in a coffee house and a scrape with an early admirer to the stage of Lincoln's Inn Fields, with Gay, Pope and the theatrical world of the period around her, and with the Duke of Bolton waiting at the end. Pearce had already written a factual study of Fenton, and the novel, published in 1913, draws on it. It is good-humored and brisk, and it takes the eighteenth century at its own gossiping word. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
