Romeo and Juliet

About 1 h 44 min of reading31 chapters

Romeo and Juliet is Shakespeare's tragedy of two young lovers in Verona whose families, the Montagues and the Capulets, are locked in a feud. They meet at a party, marry in secret the next day, and are separated within hours when Romeo kills Juliet's cousin Tybalt and is banished. A plan involving a sleeping potion and a letter that never arrives brings the play to its ending in the Capulet tomb. Written around 1595 and first printed in 1597, the play mixes bawdy comedy, from the Nurse and Mercutio, with some of the most lyrical verse Shakespeare wrote; the balcony scene and Juliet's speeches are among the best-known passages in English. The whole action takes place over four or five days. The complete play is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first chapter is free.
