As You Like It
Rosalind, daughter of a banished duke, is herself banished by her usurping uncle and flees to the Forest of Arden with her cousin Celia and the court fool Touchstone. She goes disguised as a young man called Ganymede, which becomes awkward when she meets Orlando, whom she loves and who has also fled to the forest, carving her name on trees. Rather than reveal herself she offers to cure him of love by pretending to be Rosalind. Written around 1599, the play contains the "All the world's a stage" speech, the melancholy Jaques, the shepherdess Phebe who falls for Ganymede, and more songs than any other Shakespeare comedy. Rosalind has the largest female role in his work. The complete play is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first act is free.
