The Works of William Shakespeare [Cambridge Edition] [Vol. 7 of 9]
This is the seventh of nine volumes of the Cambridge Shakespeare, the edition prepared by William George Clark and William Aldis Wright in the 1860s that became the standard text for the following half century. It contains four tragedies: Romeo and Juliet, Timon of Athens, Julius Caesar and Macbeth. Each play is printed with a full collation of the early quartos and folios and of later editors' readings at the foot of the page, followed by notes on the hardest passages, and the volume also reprints the text of the 1597 first quarto of Romeo and Juliet, which differs widely from the familiar version. It is an edition for readers who want to see how the text was made. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first act is free.
