A Midsummer Night's Dream
Four young Athenians run into the woods on a midsummer night, two of them eloping and two in pursuit, and stumble into a quarrel between the fairy king Oberon and his queen Titania. Oberon's servant Puck is sent to settle things with a love potion and applies it to the wrong eyes, so that both men abandon Hermia for Helena. In another part of the forest a company of tradesmen are rehearsing a play for the Duke's wedding, and their leading man, Bottom the weaver, is given an ass's head and the love of the fairy queen. Written around 1595, the comedy ends with the tradesmen's tragedy of Pyramus and Thisbe performed at court, one of the funniest scenes Shakespeare wrote. The complete play is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil; the first act is free.
