A Doll's House : a play
Nora Helmer is a cheerful, slightly childish wife whose husband Torvald has just been made bank manager. Years earlier she secretly borrowed money to save his life and forged her dying father's signature to do it; now the lender, a clerk Torvald means to dismiss, threatens to expose her. Over three acts set at Christmas the lie comes out, and Torvald's reaction shows Nora what her marriage has been. Henrik Ibsen's play was first staged in Copenhagen in 1879 and the slam of the door at its close was heard across Europe. This edition presents the text in R. Farquharson Sharp's translation. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first act free.
