Hedda Gabler

by Henrik Ibsen

Translated by William Archer and Edmund GosseAbout 2 h of reading6 chapters

Hedda Gabler, first performed in 1891, is Henrik Ibsen's portrait of a woman who has everything society allows her and finds it unbearable. The general's daughter has married George Tesman, a plodding scholar, for want of anything better, and returns from a six-month honeymoon already bored. Into the household come Thea Elvsted, who has left her husband to follow the reformed drunkard Eilert Lövborg, Hedda's former intimate and now Tesman's rival for a professorship, and the worldly Judge Brack, who means to make himself the third in the marriage. Hedda, armed with her father's pistols and a hunger to shape one human destiny, sets events in motion. This edition uses the translation of William Archer and Edmund Gosse. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first act is free.
