The Phantom of the Opera
The Paris Opera House is haunted. Stagehands see a figure in evening dress with a skull for a face, the managers receive letters demanding a salary and a private box, and a chandelier falls on the audience. The young soprano Christine Daaé believes she is being taught by an "Angel of Music" who speaks from behind the walls of her dressing room, and her childhood sweetheart Raoul de Chagny grows jealous of a voice. The teacher is Erik, a disfigured genius who lives in the cellars by an underground lake. Leroux published the novel in 1910 as a reporter's investigation, complete with footnotes. This edition presents the text in Alexander Teixeira de Mattos's translation, the version most English readers have known. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
