The Secret of the Night

by Gaston Leroux

About 6 h 28 min of reading21 chapters

Joseph Rouletabille, the young reporter-detective of The Mystery of the Yellow Room, is summoned to St. Petersburg to protect General Trebassof, who has survived several attempts on his life by revolutionaries after ordering a brutal repression in Moscow. Inside the general's guarded villa, the danger seems to come from within: poisoned food, a mysterious hand at a window, and suspicion falling on his own daughter Natacha. Rouletabille must work out who is loyal and who is not, while the secret police and the terrorists both watch him. Leroux sets the story against the unrest that followed the 1905 revolution, and his portrait of Russian society is as melodramatic as the plot, with living bombs, a dacha in the marshes and an audience with the Tsar.
