Sketches by Boz, Illustrative of Every-Day Life and Every-Day People
Sketches by Boz collects the pieces Charles Dickens wrote for newspapers and magazines between 1833 and 1836, his first published work, issued in two series in 1836 under the pen name he used as a reporter. They are grouped as Our Parish, with its beadle, curate and ladies' societies; Scenes of London streets by morning and night, Seven Dials, Doctors' Commons, Astley's circus and the river; Characters; and Tales, short comic stories of clerks, boarding houses and excursions. This edition reproduces the 1903 Chapman and Hall text with the illustrations of George Cruikshank and Phiz and Dickens's own preface, in which he confesses the haste and crudity of his early work. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
