Pride and Prejudice, a play founded on Jane Austen's novel

by Mrs. Steele MacKaye

About 1 h 49 min of reading7 chapters

This stage version of Pride and Prejudice was written by Mrs. Steele MacKaye, widow of the American actor and playwright Steele MacKaye, and published in 1906. In four acts it compresses Jane Austen's novel into the essential encounters: the Bennet family's hopes at the arrival of rich bachelors in the neighborhood, Elizabeth Bennet's quarrel with the proud Mr. Darcy, the charm and falsehood of Wickham, the comic pomposity of Mr. Collins, and the turns that bring pride and prejudice face to face. Much of the dialogue is taken directly from Austen, and the play shows how the novel was adapted for the American theater of the time. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first act is free.
