Mrs. Steele MacKaye

Mrs. Steele MacKaye, born Mary Medbery, was an American writer and the wife of Steele MacKaye, the actor, playwright and theater inventor who died in 1894. Their son Percy MacKaye became a poet and dramatist. Her dramatization of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice was published in New York in 1906, in four acts that draw much of their dialogue directly from the novel, and she kept the acting rights to it. The play is an example of the many stage adaptations of classic English novels made for the American theater of the period.
