Martin Chuzzlewit
Martin Chuzzlewit was published by Charles Dickens in monthly parts in 1843 and 1844. Its subject, Dickens said, was selfishness, and it follows the fortunes of a family quarreling over the expected inheritance of old Martin Chuzzlewit. His grandson, the young Martin, proud and self-absorbed, is disinherited for loving the old man's companion Mary and goes to America with the cheerful Mark Tapley, where a swindle over land in the swamp settlement of Eden nearly kills him. At home the architect Pecksniff and his daughters scheme, Jonas Chuzzlewit moves toward murder, and the nurse Sarah Gamp dispenses gin and the opinions of her imaginary friend Mrs. Harris. The American chapters gave offense across the Atlantic. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
