Looking Backward, 2000 to 1887
Looking Backward, 2000 to 1887, published in 1888, was the most influential American utopia of the nineteenth century, selling hundreds of thousands of copies and inspiring a political movement. Julian West, a wealthy Bostonian troubled by insomnia and by labor unrest, is put to sleep by a mesmerist in 1887 and wakes in the year 2000 in the house of Dr. Leete, whose explanations occupy most of the book. Industry has been nationalized into a single industrial army, every citizen receives the same income on a credit card, crime and poverty have vanished and music is piped into homes by telephone. Edward Bellamy's device of the sleeper who awakes has been borrowed many times since. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
