Gargantua and Pantagruel
Gargantua and Pantagruel is François Rabelais's comic chronicle of two giants, father and son, published in five books between 1532 and 1564. Gargantua's birth from his mother's ear, his education, his war with Picrochole and the founding of the Abbey of Thélème are followed by the adventures of his son Pantagruel and the rascally Panurge, their long debate about whether Panurge should marry, and the voyage to the oracle of the Holy Bottle. Rabelais, a physician and former monk, piles up lists, mock scholarship, obscenity and real learning, and his satire of lawyers and theologians is still sharp. This edition gives the seventeenth-century translation by Sir Thomas Urquhart, completed by Peter Anthony Motteux, itself a classic of English prose.
