Dombey and Son, published in monthly parts between 1846 and 1848, is Charles Dickens's novel of a proud London merchant who wants a son to carry on his firm and has no use for his daughter Florence. The boy, little Paul, is frail and dies young; the father remarries the cold and beautiful Edith Granger, who despises him; and his trusted manager Carker works toward their ruin. Around the Dombey house move Captain Cuttle and the instrument-maker Sol Gills, young Walter Gay, the nurse Polly Toodle and the formidable Mrs. Skewton, while the new railway tears through Camden Town. It is the first of Dickens's novels planned as a whole from the start, and pride and its punishment are its subject.
