American Notes

by Charles Dickens

About 6 h 53 min of reading21 chapters

American Notes is Charles Dickens's account of the six months he spent in the United States and Canada in 1842, published the same year. Beginning with a rough January crossing, he visits Boston, the mills of Lowell, New York, the solitary prison at Philadelphia, Congress in Washington, and then travels west by canal boat and river steamer to Cincinnati, Louisville and St. Louis, out to the prairie and back by way of Niagara and Canada. Dickens admires schools, hospitals and asylums, is appalled by spitting, newspapers and prisons, and devotes a chapter to slavery built from the slaveholders' own advertisements. The book's blunt judgments offended many American readers at the time. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
