A Martian Odyssey

About 41 min of reading1 chapters

A Martian Odyssey appeared in Wonder Stories in July 1934 and made Stanley G. Weinbaum famous overnight in the small world of science fiction. Dick Jarvis, a chemist on the first expedition to Mars, crashes his rocket far from base and walks back across the desert in the company of Tweel, a bird-like Martian he rescues from a tentacled creature. Tweel is intelligent but thinks in ways Jarvis can only half follow, and the two travel past silicon creatures that build pyramids, a dream beast that lures its prey with visions and a city of barrel-shaped builders. It was the first story to present an alien as a mind truly unlike our own, and writers from Asimov on have acknowledged the debt. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
