A journey to the world under-ground
Niels Klim, a poor graduate of Copenhagen exploring a cave above Bergen in 1664, falls through the earth's crust and finds himself orbiting a planet at its center. He lands among the Potuans, intelligent trees who move slowly, think carefully and find his quick wits a sign of shallowness, and his travels round their world and beyond it bring him to nations of philosophers, musicians, warriors and finally to a kingdom of savages whom he makes himself emperor. Ludvig Holberg, the father of Danish and Norwegian literature, published the satire in Latin in 1741; this English version appeared the following year. It stands beside Gulliver's Travels as an eighteenth-century voyage of ideas. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
