A Christmas Carol
The original manuscript
Charles Dickens published A Christmas Carol in December 1843,; the story of Ebenezer Scrooge, the London miser visited on Christmas Eve by the ghost of his partner Jacob Marley and then by three spirits, became a classic at once. Past, present and future pass before him: his lonely boyhood, the Cratchit household and its small son Tiny Tim, and a bleak glimpse of what is to come. This edition reproduces the Dover facsimile of Dickens's handwritten manuscript, now in the Morgan Library, alongside the text of the first edition and John Leech's original illustrations, showing the corrections in the author's own hand. Warm, funny and sharp about poverty, the tale did much to shape the way Christmas is still kept. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
