Zoological Mythology; or, The Legends of Animals, Volume 1 (of 2)
Angelo De Gubernatis, professor of Sanskrit at Florence, published Zoological Mythology in English in 1872. Following the comparative method of Max Müller, he set out to show that the animals of myth, fable and fairy tale across the Indo-European world descend from the imagery of the Vedic hymns, in which the dawn, the sun, the clouds and the night were pictured as cows, bulls, horses and other creatures. This first volume treats the animals of the earth: a long chapter on the cow and the bull in the Vedas and in Slavic, German and Italian stories, followed by the horse, the ass, and the sheep, the ram and the goat. The solar theory is long abandoned, but the tales remain. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first chapter is free.
