The City of God, Volume I

by Saint Augustine

About 15 h 26 min of reading17 chapters

The City of God is Augustine's answer to the shock of 410, when the Goths sacked Rome and pagans blamed the disaster on the abandonment of the old gods. Begun in 413, the work grew over more than a decade into twenty-two books. This first volume contains the opening ten, in which Augustine argues that Rome's calamities were not caused by Christianity, examines the moral record of the Roman gods and their worship, and takes apart the philosophies of Varro and the Platonists before turning to the deeper contrast that organizes the whole: two cities, one built on love of self, the other on love of God. The tone is combative, learned, and often unexpectedly personal. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
