Writings in Connection with the Donatist Controversy

by Saint Augustine

Translated by John R. KingAbout 14 h 38 min of reading21 chapters

The Donatists held that the Catholic bishops of North Africa had forfeited their authority by compromising during the persecution of Diocletian, and that sacraments administered by unworthy ministers were void. Augustine spent much of his episcopate at Hippo contesting this, and the works in this volume are his principal replies: the seven books On Baptism, Against the Donatists, which argue from Cyprian that baptism belongs to Christ and not to the minister; the three books answering the letters of the Donatist bishop Petilian; and the treatise on the correction of the Donatists, which defends the use of imperial law against them. The translation by J. R. King was published in 1872 in Marcus Dods's edition of Augustine's works. The full text is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, and the first essay is free.
