History of Ancient Pottery: Greek, Etruscan, and Roman. Volume 2 (of 2)
This is the second volume of H. B. Walters's History of Ancient Pottery, published in 1905 as a thorough rewriting of Samuel Birch's older work. Where the first volume dealt with technique and the development of Greek wares, this one treats the subjects painted on Greek vases, with chapters on the gods, Herakles, the Theban and Trojan legends, Attic myth, and scenes of religion, funerals, theater, athletics, trades, women's lives and war; it then turns to Etruscan and South Italian pottery and to the wares of the Roman Empire, from Arretine relief vessels to the red-gloss pottery of Gaul, Germany and Britain. Walters was a keeper at the British Museum, and the book long served as the standard English survey. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
