The Egyptian Book of the Dead is the modern name for the collection of spells, hymns and litanies that the ancient Egyptians buried with their dead to guide them through the underworld, called by them the Chapters of Coming Forth by Day. This translation of the Theban recension was begun by Sir Peter Le Page Renouf, Keeper of Egyptian Antiquities at the British Museum, and completed after his death by Édouard Naville of Geneva; it was published by the Society of Biblical Archaeology in 1904. The chapters are given in order, each with a commentary, and an index refers to the vignettes, the pictures that accompanied the texts in the papyri. Renouf's introduction discusses the history, language and religious ideas of the collection. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
