Dhammapada, a Collection of Verses; Being One of the Canonical Books of the Buddhists

The Dhammapada is a collection of 423 verses attributed to the Buddha and preserved in the Pali canon of Theravada Buddhism. Arranged in twenty-six chapters on themes such as thoughtfulness, the fool, the wise man, happiness, anger, old age, the self, and the true Brahmana, it is a handbook of the moral life rather than a treatise: mind is the forerunner of all actions, hatred is never appeased by hatred, the conquest of oneself is greater than the conquest of others. F. Max Müller's translation, with his introduction on the text and its history, appeared in 1881 as part of the Sacred Books of the East and was for decades the standard English version. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first chapter free.
