The Book of the Thousand Nights and a Night — Volume 02 (of 10)
This is the second of the ten volumes of Richard Francis Burton's unexpurgated translation of the Arabian Nights, first printed privately in 1885. It continues the stories Shahrazad tells to delay her execution, beginning with the tale of Nur al-Din Ali and the slave girl Anis al-Jalis and the tale of Ghanim bin Ayyub, the Distraught Thrall of Love, with the two eunuchs' stories folded inside it. Most of the volume is the romance of King Omar bin al-Nu'uman and his sons Sharrkan and Zau al-Makan, a chronicle of war between Muslims and Christians that itself contains the tales of Taj al-Muluk and the Princess Dunya and of Aziz and Azizah. Burton's archaic English and copious footnotes are part of the experience. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first story free.
