The poetic Edda
The Poetic Edda is the collection of Old Norse mythological and heroic poems preserved chiefly in the Codex Regius, an Icelandic manuscript of the thirteenth century, and it is the principal source for what we know of the gods of the North. The mythological poems include the Völuspá, the seeress's prophecy of the creation and destruction of the world, the Hávamál, the sayings of the High One, Odin, and the comic Thrymskvida, in which Thor dresses as a bride to recover his hammer. The heroic poems tell of Helgi, Sigurd, Brynhild and the fall of the Niflungs. Henry Adams Bellows's translation, published in 1923, gives each poem an introduction and detailed notes. It is available to read online in your browser on Vinteuil, with the first poems free.
